My Project

Our school team has had an incredible focus this year on engagement and improving reading instruction. One critical component of reading instruction is what we call an interactive read aloud. Interactive read alouds help students by building vocabulary, fluency, listening skills, classroom community, higher order thinking, and comprehension skills. Through our increased focus on providing high quality read-alouds, we have found that creating a designated space to engage in this experience would be very beneficial.

This rug gives students a place where they feel comfortable, and a place where they can be more “at home” It will also foster opportunities within classroom management to increase engagement as well as intentional collaboration between peers.

We know that when engagement is increased, so too will student achievement. With our current work around the Science of Reading, we are looking forward to implementing a multitude of collaborative partner opportunities and the rug will help create a management structure to facilitate that work. The rug I’m requesting would have enough space for 30 students to sit comfortably, and easily see who their partners are. With the rug, students will be more focused and engaged with each other, rather than what is on the floor. Additionally, we will also leverage the rug during math rotations where students will be able to work with partners or small groups in designated areas. It will be used during morning meetings where we can gather around the carpet and build our classroom community. And finally, throughout the day it can be used as a flexible seating area for students who may need more space to work. All of these examples will help increase classroom engagement and continued growth in reading and math achievement.
