I have a great group of second grade students who love to learn and collaborate with each other. We are building a strong sense of community, where we can work in different groups and areas of the classroom while mingling with all students. My students enjoy the freedom of flexible seating around the room and the ability to sit away from their traditional tables and chairs. Glancing into my classroom and you may find students on carpet squares, under desks, sitting on the steps, laying on the floor or rocking in the chair, but fully engaged in the activity. They love to move their bodies and they have the opportunity to do so in my room. It is a pleasure to watch my students be independent and responsible while carefully selecting how they are going to best learn and focus on their work. It gives them a sense of independence and control over their learning.
My Project
Sitting at desks and tables all day is hard for anyone, especially for kids. Flexible seating promotes a strong community of engaged learners through comfort and choice. Traditional tables can become crowded and students are stuck in the same place, surrounding by the same people. Bean bags, mats and lounge chairs will give students the ability to sit freely and comfortably around the room. Kids need to move their bodies and these materials let them do that. We need to keep these kids focused and engaged!
The donations to this project will help my students be more engaged while being comfortable and in control of their learning environment.
When students are comfortable, they are more focused and willing to work.
