Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This year I moved to a brand new role at a new school. I will now get to focus more on multilingual learners and their English language development. I'm putting together a new classroom, piecemeal from discarded furniture in the school storage unit.

I am teaching a wonderful group of students this year!

They are all English Language Learners, which means that on top of learning new grade-level skills and information, they are navigating and improving upon their English language skills while they speak a different language at home. What a big job for these little kiddos!

A large percentage of or school's students are eligible for subsidized lunch, meaning they come from homes functioning near or below the poverty line. Some are Students with Limited or Interrupted Formal Education (SLIFE). Some are newcomers having just arrived in the US this summer. While they may be faced with challenges and changes, in their lives at home, on their way to school, and after they leave us at the end of the day, they do not let this get in the way of their goals!

My Project

As I'm putting together my new ESL classroom, I am so lucky to have a full storage room to pull desks and chairs from. However, using hand-me-downs means some pieces are not intended for these age groups, and many have seen better days.

By filling this space with new furniture picked out just for them, my students will see that their learning is valued and important.

It will also help me create a brighter, more cheerful room for them to walk into each day. This is particularly important as our room does not have any windows. Our multilingual learners deserve a beautiful, effective space to work in.
