Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Students basic needs must be fulfilled in order for them to excel in academics.

I teach at a Title I school where over 70% receive free or reduced lunch, and over 80% are English language learners.

They are vibrant and full of curiosity about life and growing up, yet confused and struggling to make it through their adolescent years. My classes are made up of about 70% Hispanic students. The rest is made up of Filipino and white. Most speak a second language at home. Despite these added challenges to growing up, they try their very best every day to learn something new.

My Project

I'm asking for two different categories to improve my classroom and my students' experience: logic puzzles and toys, and organizational tools. After building a small collection of toys on my own, I have found my middle school students really love to try and figure out varying logic puzzles and I love to see them try and solve it on their own, even during lunch time or class breaks. The stress toys also really help some students focus and relieve stress during class time which reduces distractions to the overall class and improves learning for the individuals.

With these toys, they will not only help increase and improve student attention and focus, but also get students exciting about learning in unique ways.

Students already ask for and use these toys and puzzles daily in my classroom, and by helping us get more, more students will have access to them. Furthermore, the organizational tools in my project will help students gain responsibility as they are able to get materials on their own as well as put everything away because everything will have a designated place to go. Kids at this age really appreciate when teachers and other adults display trust by giving them more responsibilities.
