This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Harry Potter is one of my all-time favorite protagonists. Despite the series of unfortunate events that have plagued his life, Harry is able to reach his rightful place at Hogwarts as a new wizard. He struggles with adapting to the wizarding world and harnessing his powers, but he meets plenty of interesting people who help him along the way, especially his best friends, Ron and Hermione. He even has the most powerful wizard, Albus Dumbledore in his corner! Harry must deal with Malfoy and survive life-threatening endeavors - all while trying to defeat Voldemort. Classic hero’s journey vibes.

I have the entire boxed set of the Harry Potter series in my classroom, but I’m lucky if two students will flip through the pages.

How can I combat such apathy for literature in this generation? One word: Manga.

Manga is just anime in its literary form. Even my most reluctant readers will read manga. I have tons of great literature on my shelves, but there is no denying what sparks a real fire.

Manga can have the same depth to them as the classics. Enter My Hero Academia, where we follow our protagonist, Izuku “Deku” Midoriya. Deku gets thrown into a new life when he inherits a quirk called “One-for-All.” He must adapt to its strength before it tears him apart all while trying to avoid the wrath of Bakugo, “All-for-One” and many other terrifying villains. Good thing he has a mentor, who just so happens to be the #1 superhero in the world, All Might! He studies at UA where he makes friends with other aspiring heroes. Sound familiar? Deku is a modern-day Harry Potter. A classic hero in a manga world.
