Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I will never forget the first time I read A Wrinkle in Time. It honestly changed my life. The thrill of discovering worlds outside our own is one of the greatest reasons for reading a classic such as this. Students also discover how much we, as humans, all have in common.
My students are 7th graders in a low income area of Los Angeles.
They are struggling readers and writers who are aiming toward proficiency on the state tests. Like many middle school kids, they have issues with self image, friendships, family problems, and finding how they fit in this world. 70% are from homes where a language other than English is primary. They are full of life and questions and deserve all that we can offer them.
My Project
My students need 40 copies of A Wrinkle In Time, a classic literature book to read and analyze. A Wrinkle in Time is a novel about family, time and space travel, individuality, and hope. My students will have the chance to read this adventure together. Along with literary analysis, vocabulary development, and creative writing, we will also work collaboratively with their science teacher to explore the history and possible future(s) of technology and space travel. Integrated learning is a focus at our school site. This book provides the perfect opportunity to work together across the curriculum.
The students at my school are hungry for new experiences.
With budget cuts affecting their already limited supply of good books, they really need the generosity of others. Theirs is a low income neighborhood, where many parents are not fluent or literate in English. For many, the novels they read at school are the only ones they'll see. They realize that they actually do enjoy reading when great reading material is available. With this discovery, new worlds open up for them.
