Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am proud to be a teacher in the New York City Public School system for the past ten years. I teach at a small school in a low-income area in East Harlem, New York. If there's anything I'm known for it's my love of books. I have a large in-class library that was created with the help of New York City Department of Education purchases, personal purchases from Thrift stores and donations from people like you. Many teachers come to my class to borrow books. We have enough to share with others. However, we do not have enough copies of single titles to use as a class. New York City follows the Balanced Literacy Method for Reading. One part of this method is called Shared Reading. During Shared Reading students read the same text for discussions, review of grammar and reading comprehension lessons. Despite our large library, we are lacking in this area. I resort to copies of borrowed passages and chart paper. I, for one, learned better as a child if I had the actual book in hand that I was being taught from as opposed to a carbon copy that was easily disposable. I believe this to be the case with my students as well. It is important for students to hold a book, read the book in school and take the book home too. Shared Reading can be made more meaningful to the students this way. This is why I am asking for your generous donations of 2 or more class sets of novels for my 26 bright Second graders.
