Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are inspirational, creative, and hardworking. They are all unique in their interests, their learning, their abilities and so much more. They all have a desire to learn each day despite difficulties that they encounter. Almost 100% of my students are on the free and reduced-rate lunch program based on their socioeconomic status.
My students love discovering new information, and using atlases is one of their favorite activities.
They are learning world geography while going on a quest for different cities, countries, and geographical features all over the world.
My Project
Sixth-grade world culture students explore people, cultures, and places of the contemporary world. Major units of study include geography and culture. Students utilize social studies skills such as interpreting maps and graphs while investigating regions of the world. An essential resource for any student of social studies is a good Atlas. Having atlases builds map-reading skills, research skills such as finding information in an index, and reinforces concepts such as latitude and longitude. We use atlases for many activities of world cultures throughout the school year.
We need to have a consistent set of atlases so we can avoid confusion and communicate effectively in Geography!
Help avoid the confusion! My students are currently working with a limited number of several different atlas resources in my room. Currently, we do not have enough atlases for the entire class, so students have had to share. Also, the ones we do have are missing pages or have torn pages which causes confusion for my students. Having a complete and current set of classroom atlases would make an enormous difference to the class.
In the World Atlas, geographical, political and cultural information is available. It serves a number of purposes. These maps provide detailed information on the subject that supports sixth-grade social studies essential knowledge and skills. With a class set of World Atlases, my students could see, up close and accessible, the maps they need to be familiar with and interpretation skills that are essential for their success.
