I teach at a magnet school for gifted and high-achieving students. We serve students in grades 6-12 from throughout our district. Students test for admission, and most students are functioning above the 90th percentile. All students are working at least one grade level above their actual age. The students in my school are a true melting pot of nationalities, religions, and economic levels, but the common trait that they have is the love of being challenged and learning new things. My students challenge each other, and me, to learn more and do their very best, both in and out of the classroom!
My Project
For several years, our school hosted a Prom Fest - as a safe alternative to traditional after-prom parties. We've had great participation - and it was truly an event that the students really enjoyed. One of the highlights of the evening is a prize give away - where the students won prizes that they really wanted - and things that they could use in college! Last year, both prom and prom fest were, unfortunately (but understandably), canceled - but we hosted a "Wheel of Prizes" night - where we gave away prizes to every single senior in the class of 2020.
With much uncertainty about what the spring holds, we want to start getting prizes to celebrate this amazing class of seniors.
In the best-case scenario, we will once again host prom and prom fest for our students. In that case, these items will all become prizes at that event. If we are once again unable to host these events, we know that we can at least provide the students with smiles as we give them prizes for college or whatever path their futures take!
