Like students before them, some of the seniors picked out a day of the school year to use as a senior skip day. Little did they know that the day they happened to miss would be the last day of high school for the year due to our Governor canceling all face-to-face instruction because of COVID-19. At first, the students thought yay, they could sleep in and miss a week of school before Spring Break. As time went on, though, and the Governor's orders got extended, imagine their shock when it literally became the never-ending senior skip day.
Not only that, but I didn't even get to say a proper goodbye to them.
Reality has hit hard for me, too, as these are students I also had in my classes in sixth and tenth grades. We don't get to experience the last day of school together where they traditionally walk down the halls with all the teachers and underclassmen giving them tearful hugs and high fives with music playing over the loudspeaker.
Now, students truly miss being with their friends and teachers. Some want to keep learning and to hang on to their last grasp of high school.
My Project
My seniors, like many others across the country, missed out on prom, spring sports, the school play -- even their graduation ceremony is pending. Now, they are doing assignments via distance learning. Their grade for the semester cannot be lowered if they choose not to participate; however, many opt to come online to write senior memory book chapters, do creative writing challenges, and participate in Google Meets with me. I am also asking students to keep a pandemic journal to capture this important time in history.
I would love to do a "door dash" and drop off a care package with a journal and a snack for these seniors who are participating in distance learning.
I already dropped off similar care packages to a couple of seniors, including one joining the Navy and another living in a group home, so I know they appreciate the gesture, but I need help getting more materials for their learning at home. I am also requesting a book for one senior who would like to finish her favorite series for her independent reading assignment; I ask students to log their daily reading activity.
Let's uplift these students and keep them reading and writing and their minds sharp for the next stage of life where new memories can be made whether that be in college, the military, or the workforce.
