Mrs. Nelson from Greensboro NC is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need 25 copies of Rifles for Watie to use for a whole-class literature study unit exploring characters, theme and the historical context of the novel.

Help our children read! As surprising as it may sound to some, a large portion of our students cannot read on grade level. Many large and complex challenges face teachers as we strive to help our students reach grade level. What are among the necessary tools? Books!
Growing up in a low-income area, in a fairly large city in North Carolina isn't always easy.
My students living in this area face many difficulties that require a maturity well beyond their years. Among the struggles of single-parent families, low household income, hunger and neighborhood violence, many students deal with being below grade level in school. If that were not challenging enough, the school building in which these students attempt to learn is nearly 100 years old, lacks adequate heating and cooling systems, does not have sufficient technology for learning 21st Century skills and does not have excess money for essential materials including books, paper, pencils, etc. for student use.
In order to work towards our school's goal of helping each student become competent and life-long readers, we need access to more books. We have limited access to class sets of novels and 25 copies of Rifles for Watie would help us as we strive to meet state core objectives in the area of reading. Reading novels as a class is a wonderful method to help hook students on books and have a desire to continue their reading careers.
Please help us obtain a class set of these books.
Rifles for Watie will be an excellent addition to our school's library. It will also serve as an excellent springboard to important discussions about war, racism, prejudice, slavery and loyalty--real-life issues that our students would greatly benefit from.
