Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach students in grades K-5 who have disabilities ranging from specific learning disabilities and intellectual delays to students who are on the autism spectrum. Despite the daily obstacles my students face, they are kind, funny, unique, caring, and motivated to learn. Many of my students come from low-income households and are lacking in wants and needs. School is a consistent place of structure in the lives of the students, and they deserve to be provided with the tools they need to be successful both academically and emotionally. They are in need of a learning environment that is functional and supportive of their learning.
My Project
Sensory items, interactive games, and classroom supplies will provide my students with a learning environment in which they can be successful. My students need individualized academic and social emotional interventions to build skills in order to function in their daily lives. Many of my students are working on coping mechanisms and self regulation strategies as well as academics. The use of a sensory table, a quiet space, and sensory fidgets allows them to meet their sensory and emotional needs, which increases their ability to succeed academically. Many of my students are not working on grade level and need individualized interventions in order to ensure they are making academic gains. These materials will help me to create the individual lessons that will engage the students to help them grow!
