My Students

Located in our nation's capital, my Title I school serves the needs of a diverse community of students and families, particularly English language learners. In my current classroom, at least six different languages are spoken among all of my students, each of them equally beautiful and complex.

At the beginning of my year, it is difficult for my students to speak with one another because of the obvious language barriers but as a family, we develop a sense of vulnerability and safety, and together we learn to make mistakes and trust one another.

Through this process, I see my students begin to develop friendships, despite their inability to fully communicate through words. This is one of the most humbling, profound experiences to witness, and it cannot fairly be described by the limitations of my own language.

I am proud to serve my students and will continue to work with my families to improve the well being of all people in fair, respectful ways.

My Project

Most children's books feature white, middle-class protagonists. While many of these narratives are excellent examples of children's literature, there is a lack of texts that reflect the experiences of other races, social classes, and cultures.

I am requesting over 30 texts that more broadly represent the identities of the students that I serve.

These texts feature stories about civil rights, human rights, religion, and language. When students begin to see their own lives reflected in their school, they feel validated and seen. These texts will foster a love of reading and a passion for justice that is important to instill in our children.
