This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My school has a demographic of upper-middle class students and high-poverty students. The population that I teach primarily lives in public housing. These children frequently attend school without the proper supplies, torn backpacks--or no backpacks--and wear the same clothes everyday. They have free breakfast, lunch, and dinner each day because they cannot afford to bring their own.
My students deserve the world, in a world that's unfair to them.
No matter their circumstances, they are bright, they are deserving, and they are wonderful.
My Project
With this class set of the novel Cinder, my students will be able to experience their novel both inside and outside of the classroom. They will have the opportunity to research the traditional fairytale that inspired this novel as well as other adaptions, and compare the different texts.
"Cinder" is the science fiction retelling of the classic tale, Cinderella--only now, our heroine is a cyborg, a "race" that the people of New Beijing unfairly discriminate.
This novel holds themes all children can relate to, of courage and friendship and feminism; and carries a mystery so engrossing students will be eager to read the second book.
