This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Nothing can more profoundly unlock one’s ability to change their legacy than access to quality education. My eclectic group of students are rich in culture, interests and talents. This loving group of urban middle school students are a lively and inquisitive group who have a profound interest in developing their unique talents and exploring their worlds. All of them thrive on engaging, active explorations that are contemporary and relevant to them.
However, they are challenged by low lexile levels, antiquated and non-existent lab equipment and limited access to technology.
The average student in my 8th grade class reads on the 3 grade level and struggles with basic mathematical calculations. The majority of students believe that science is an abstract idea that does not apply to their lives. They are expected to come off of the Focus list without the necessary requisite infrastructure, tools and a detached view of science. I would love to provide, our future with a way to gather, organize and reflect on authentic scientific information.
My Project
Conceptual Physical Science alone is a difficult concept for many 8th grade students to grasp. When you add note taking, organization and studying to the scientific concepts it becomes virtually impossible for some. Students will use the journals, markers, construction paper, sciccors and glue to construct a colorful, thoughhtful and detailed interactive notebook that will help them to capture their thoughts and organize what they learned so they can study and build upon their scientific literacy for years to come.
The use of a well crafted interactive notebook will help students take pride in gathering and sharing scientific ideas, serve as a platform for scaffolding and ultimately bolster students' achievement and interest in science.
