I get to teach some great kids! High school freshmen are an adventure. They come into high school not knowing what is expected or required of them, even if they think that they do know. They come into high school needing to develop skills that will make them successful in high school. The kids who are closest to my heart are ones who have struggled and had a hard time in school and usually in other areas of their lives, as well.
Some have come close to giving up on school, some have low self-esteem, others come from low-income families or families in difficult situations, and most have some combination of these disadvantages.
Still, they are kids who want to do well in life. When you get to know these kids, you know that this is true. Increasing the level of technology at their fingertips is a real plus in this effort.
My Project
In the 21st century students need quick and easy access to technology and the Internet. There are more resources available ( such as "Kahoot" or "Flipgrid"), and our school has subscribed to Discovery Learning and a service that allows us to put images, links, and documents on a classroom page. All of these things require devices so that students can quickly navigate these resources. An additional Chromebook will allow my students who cannot afford the latest smartphone, and there are many of those, to get right into the same level of learning and skill development as any other student on campus.
