Chromebooks to Address the COVID Created Crisis

My Students

My 43 Chinese Dual Immersion students are generally hard working and want to do well in all their work. Because of the rigors of their program, I have many students who deal with anxiety. They are learning more than their peers. With all the quarantining required by COVID-19, some are even more anxious because of frequent separation. They look around and see the great work around them and feel like they might be lacking in important skills.

Because they come from different areas into this feeder school, sometimes they feel even more under scrutiny with their scholastic performance.

They need support and guidance as they figure out who they are and the great things they can accomplish. They can look at real time data with technological support and know instantly how to make corrections which leaves them feeling more at peace.

My Project

I have 5 students who need to learn how to divide by whole numbers. I have 4 students who are ready to use algebra tiles to solve an equation. The solution to these two different challenges is personalized instruction. The pandemic has increased the disparity between students’ levels of understanding. I need to teach 6th graders in small groups. My students need SMART goals set both with me and by me that can measure and evaluate progress. I can confidently teach mini groups of 5 students with common goals when I know that I can assign those students additional practice that can be monitored, assessed, and then evaluated.

My students need the flexibility in their personalized practice enabled by enough Chromebooks.

When students have to share Chromebooks, they can lose up to 20 minutes signing one student out and another student in which is almost 30% of their supervised learning time. In order to address student needs in the COVID widened learning gaps, teachers and students need more precise intervention with the tools that can deliver the practice the student needs to not only improve, but flourish!
