Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is a small middle college/charter school in Oklahoma.

Our students are primarily Hispanic (79%), low income (88% free/reduced lunch) and eager to change their futures through education.

Almost 75% of our students are first generation high school graduates and 83% first generation college students. Our school emphasizes technology as part of the learning experience. The problem is that we do not have enough Chromebooks for our concurrent enrollment students. Many students access the Internet with a cell phone or a computer at home but not all students have this option. Without this basic access, our students will never achieve their full potential. With phones, access is often limited and not all features of basic computer programs will even work.

Chromebooks will allow my students to access a world outside of our immediate community. They will bridge the gap between our present reality and the past, present, future of the United States and the world. They will learn from past the mistakes and create the future.

My Project

These Chromebooks will increase the access of my concurrent students to the Internet and its many resources. There are different types of learners and when it comes to English, and most other subjects, not every student can learn from lectures. The Chromebooks will allow my students to find different sources to help them to better understand the topics in their college classes. It will allow them to create projects and write papers as is required by college professors. Technology will allow the students to check out books from the Library of Congress; to read their textbook online; and to explore new experiences and opportunities. As second language learners, the Chromebooks will allow them to use apps that can help them understand their curriculum and their world.

Several of my students will be able to get an associate’s degree before they graduate high school.

For lower income students, to be at the halfway point of achieving their dream of a college education is a blessing. This will definitely improve their outlook, perspective, and motivation to become lifelong learners by allowing them to access a world beyond their current existence. This will in turn create caring, productive learners who know their value and who know they can! achieve more.
