Each day, first graders depend on me to teach them how to read, write, and develop problem-solving skills that will be the foundation of their education. These students come from a variety of diverse backgrounds. Their families qualify for free lunch and often do not have the means to provide literature, manipulatives, and other educational tools at home. So, I feel it is my role to provide them with rich learning experiences on a day to day basis.
Due to their backgrounds and limitations in resources at home, my students often enter elementary school significantly behind their more affluent peers but all of them are eager to learn.
As a first grade teacher, I did not value taking time to teach my students how to use a computer. I assumed that they would learn along the way and these were not skills that I needed to teach. Given the current educational situation in which most schools are closed, I see the error in my ways. As we moved to "distance learning" via Google classroom in early March, I realized I could be doing so much more with my students virtually if I had taught basic computer skills and incorporated Google classroom in our face-to-face classroom.
These Chromebooks will be the tools in which I am able to teach basic computer skills such as typing, using the internet, using Google Classroom, and more.
As a Google Certified Teacher, I now have the knowledge of how to teach my first graders these skills and will be able to incorporate more online lessons into our daily routine. In doing so, my students will be prepared to learn in whatever mode is presented to them and will gain important skills in digital literacy they can use throughout their life.
