My fifth graders seek to be "the good" you see in the world. I teach at a Title I school in a city that is very transient. Every day is a new adventure, and my students always show up eager to learn. They aren't afraid to stand up for what is right, and they constantly strive to be better individuals. These kids come from various socioeconomic backgrounds and culturally diverse families. The kindness and respect they display towards myself and one another despite their differences, is inspiring.
The school year just started, but I can already tell this group is special.
These students make me laugh and pause to appreciate the little moments that make life great. For these reasons, I try to be the teacher they deserve. I can't let these kids down, which is why I need your help.
My Project
These chromebooks will change the way my students learn and grow. To start, technology is a huge part of our society. Whether it be a laptop, smartphone, or tablet, many kids are accessing different forms of technology outside of school for recreational purposes. Many of my students mention websites and apps such as YouTube, Instagram, and Musical.ly. With that being said, I want them to learn to utilize technology in ways which will allow them to be prosperous in their future endeavors. If my students are to thrive in the 21st century, I need to ensure they are prepared with the skills necessary to use technology for reasons other than "just for fun."
After looking at survey results for my class, it was noted that many students tend to be more engaged with academic content when technology is involved.
If we received these chromebooks, students would be able to work on their typing, research, and presentation skills. The amount of engagement across the curriculum would skyrocket.
Currently, I have five chromebooks. I'm able to get a small group on the chromebooks for research, projects, and essays. However, it is challenging to create a fun project for all thirty students to complete because they have to share the chromebooks and monitor their time. In addition, class sizes keep growing so the extra chromebooks would definitely help with an increase of students.
This year, I have a very deserving group of kids. They are some of the sweetest students I've ever had the privilege of teaching. I know many of them don't have access to technology at home, which makes this DonorsChoose project even more crucial for their success. I hope you consider my project for these kids.
