My sixth-grade math class is a place of challenge and discovery. Not only are my students learning to navigate middle school for the first time, but many of them are unconfident in their math skills.
We are a Title I school where over 80% of our students are English language learners, qualify for free and reduced-priced lunch, or in foster care.
Although they face many challenges, my students come to school ready to learn, and know they can be successful through effort. We work hard every day to make real-world connections, solve challenging problems, and collaborate with peers to prepare students for their lives beyond middle school. Because there is a wide variety of learners within our classroom, I need the tools to be able to extend and challenge learners while helping students build foundational math skills.
My Project
Having adequate technology in my classroom can help me close the opportunity gap for many of my learners. We have to work hard everyday to not only meet sixth grade standards, but to also refine and master foundational math skills. Our current curriculum has an online component that engages students in creating mathematical scenarios rather than "drill and kill" practice. Having more access to Chromebooks will allow me to differentiate instruction to all my students; revisiting topics or providing challenging extension, as needed. Not only will I be able to tailor curriculum to student needs, but access to technology will allow me to give my students more immediate feedback, creating more competent and confident math students.
Right now, our single classroom set of Chromebooks is shared between four classrooms.
It simply is not enough. There is a plethora of meaningful math manipulatives which will help my students master their content, that we cannot access due to lack of technology. Your donation will help me get one step closer to have my 110 students in a 1:1 device environment.
