As a kindergarten teacher, I never imagined becoming a virtual classroom teacher. My students and I didn't get to say goodbye when they left for spring break in March. I have dropped off materials at door steps and given away books. Parents are getting worksheet packets from the district. All of my children "come" to Zoom meetings to connect and learn.
My students most in need are my ELL children working from their parents' phones.
They are not able to access the same resources as classmates with iPads and laptops.
As a kindergarten teacher, I have spent hours reading books, modeling science experiments, and creating fun lessons using all the cool materials folks are sharing. We use Zoom, Seesaw, iReady, Learning A-Z, Bloomz. We write stories, go on virtual field trips, and solve math problems.
My English Language Learning students are falling further behind.
They are using phones and cannot log in and complete the same activities as their classmates who have iPads and computers. They come to Zoom classes each day to connect, work and learn. They need to be able to keep learning when Zoom ends. My district and I will have resources they can use throughout the summer, if they have the Chromebooks they need!
