I have two classes of bright young 6th graders that really want to learn and use technology. My classes are very large but my students do their best to manage. They like to work in groups and explore new topics. They work on a lot of research projects, big and small, almost daily. These kids represent a very diverse set of races and economic situations. We pride ourselves on having a little bit of everything, we are truly multicultural.
This large group of 6th graders would greatly benefit from more experience with technology.
They know that understanding technology and how it operates is a key to being successful in the future. There are many very intelligent students that would thrive with the use of computers. But we also have kids with varying degrees of special needs. They also really enjoy interacting with technology and exploring learning online. We are also encouraging our students to learn to code.
My Project
My students realize that technology is an important part of their future. Right now we do not have enough technology for everyone to use a computer. We would like a set of Chromebooks so kids can research topics, write essays, and learn to code.
Recently, my students have done research and analyzed World War 2 propaganda posters.
They were able to find examples of old posters and analyze the message being communicated and how it contributed to the war effort and people's lives in general. My students are also studying Egypt. With computers we can take virtual tours of the pyramids and really see what Egypt was like in 3000 BCE. Not an easy thing to visualize as an 11 year old. Computers are an important tool in any classroom today; that is their future.
