Students in my English 9 class are consistently participating in complicated conversations about literature, their lives, and their world, and adding one to one classroom technology will only enhance their thinking and discovery.
When creating the "rules" for our classroom community my students had incredible things to say:
"We should be able to engage in our own learning."
"English class should go beyond writing essays and reading stories.
The world is changing, so we need to learn differently."
"English should be fun #turntup"
"I do not just want to take tests. I want to write creatively and be able to read other people's expressions."
My students are engaged, willing, and determined to be participants in an English class that will embrace their identity and guide them to be better thinkers, readers, and writers. I am constantly astounded by what my ninth grade students have to say critically about their world. Many of them are intimately aware of how to use technology and social media in profound ways. The problem is, we do not have everyday access to technology in our classroom to do so.
My Project
I am requesting eleven Chromebooks so my students can actively engage in technology. Currently, we are restricted by using our phones, which not every student has, or writing pen to paper. Chromebooks would give my students the opportunity not just to type writing assignments, but also to:
- Perform individual research through Google Forms
- Engage in meaningful lessons through use of Pear Deck and other Google Add-ons
- Communicate "live" through discussions on Google Docs.
- Easily share and edit work through Google Docs.
- Save all of their items effectively online to create digital portfolios
- Move towards and greener, paperless classroom environment
The donated Chromebooks will improve my classroom by allowing students to participate in and preparing them for the 21st century.
This small set of Chromebooks will hopefully serve as a smaller case study in order to orchestrate the importance of classroom technology and begin to transform other classrooms into spaces for 21st century learning.
