Hi, let me introduce my students. I work at a Title I school in a Special Education Behavior Options Class with up to 12 students ranging from 1st to 3rd grade. Behavior is an extension of communication. So, I feel my kids are trying to let those of us around them know, that they have a need not being fulfilled. It is my job to discover what those needs are and to do my best to fill them in creative and engaging ways. It is also my job to help them learn other ways to express themselves.
The students in my class are creative and expressive and always looking for engaging activities.
They deserve to learn and to have fun doing it. Despite their troubles, they are eager to learn and especially love technology
My Project
I know Stem activities teach problem solving and critical thinking skills. These are the fundamental reasoning skills that my students currently lack. They come to me from all over the District because their behavior is affecting their ability to learn. I need to provide creative and research based activities that reach these sections of their brains. To teach them an alternative way to express themselves.
I have started to work with my students on Code.org and want to solidify what they are learning by extending their knowledge with the robots.
As they have worked through the lessons on Code.org, I have notice high levels of engagement and a willingness to persevere through new content areas. Normally my students shut down when they encounter tasks or educational material they don't understand. I currently do not have enough Chromebooks for each student and would like to add the Robots to extend these new coding skills the students are developing.
