My Students

Hello,

I currently teach 2nd grade at a Title I school.

I teach the whole 2nd-grade technology skills. The students are learning how to code and how to use all the Google Apps such as Slides, Docs and Forms. My students are hard working and dedicated to learning all they can. Unfortunately, they don't have the resources they need to be successful. The majority of my students live in poverty. Our school has a 78% FARMS rate. That mean 78% of the students can't afford to purchase a lunch daily. That said, they love to learn and want to be challenged daily. I always love to see how motivated they are in all subjects.

My class is full of students that have very little background knowledge of how to use technology. The majority of the students I teach are newcomers or first generation Americans. They are lacking the simple background knowledge that they need to have a level playing field with the other students that have parents at home that can support them in the English language as well as the culture. They have so many questions and are so eager to learn every moment.

My Project

Our students are in need of earbuds and a mouse for their Chromebooks. The students are working this year on coding and several other projects such as Google Slides, creating a classroom website and animations just to name a few. We are fortunate that each child has a Chromebook but they did not come with headphones or a mouse. For coding there is a lot of music and instructions that they need to hear individually. However, if everyone is listening to their own computer it gets very loud. It makes it very difficult for some of the students that learn best when it is quiet.

As the students get a little older they do more complicated tasks on the computers.

Many students really are much more efficient when they have a mouse. Some times students get so frustrated when the track pad does not work the way they want it to. As well, they tell me that using the track pad hurts their fingers.

The students can not afford to purchase and bring these items to class. It would be amazing to get funded to allow the students to have access to these basic tools that would allow them to be more efficient.
