Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
If you come to our town you will think you have entered a third world country. But our school is trying to help students surmount the barriers of poverty, illiteracy, and prejudice. Our special needs students (who are 95% Hispanic) have made lofty goals to learn reading and writing, even graduation from high school and attending college.
In order to accomplish these goals my students need access to technology.
Due to poverty, most of them can't get this access at home.
My Project
My special needs students need to develop the skills they need to function in society in the 21st Century. They need to be afforded every opportunity to learn at high levels. The materials provided to me are woefully inadequate to teach even basic skills. Students need to learn keyboarding and digital citizenship skills. Additionally, they need the opportunity to use some of the many educational software options that are available to be able to accomplish their IEP goals. Many of my students have IEP goals that include adaptive technology, yet we are not able to provide this technology to them.
Having Chromebooks will allow each of my students to study at their own, individual level, to accomplish their own IEP goals.
Having a classroom set of Chromebooks will allow my students to take their standardized tests (SAGE) in an alternative location to the computer lab and will allow them to be distraction free and take the time they need to complete testing.
Most of my students are not able to afford computers in their home. Most do not even have internet access. Providing Chromebooks to help them learn the skills needed for today's workplace is paramount.
Our rural, high needs school has a population which is 95% Hispanic. The availability of Chromebooks will help students to be able to translate from one language to the other and will help improve their comprehension.
Some of my students have diminished physical and mental capacity. The availability of Chromebooks allowsthem to access various programs and software that will adapt to their particular disability, whether it be vision impairment or another disability.
Many of my students are not able to express in words their gratitude for your help. So I thank you for them.
