I used to teach a vibrant Kindergarten class who are part of a large urban school district that is struggling to remotely educate our mostly low-income students. The district is trying their best to provide a remote learning opportunity for each child. The district has gone out of their way to provide assignments that are available in packets and online. Along with instituting MicroSoft Teams for all so students who have no technology can even reach their teachers for support. As well as gathering and distributing laptops starting with high school seniors.
However, with all the inequities facing our population on a daily basis, the school closure due to Covid-19, has exacerbated these issues of accessibility to education.
I know it will be a while, if ever, before they get to the Kindergarten children with technology. My class runs the gamut when it comes to accessibility. A few families have laptops for their child, another couple share a laptop with their child as they work from home, a few have an old tablet, but that majority are operating through the 1 family smartphone, with most struggling to get online!
My Project
My goal is to acquire a Chromebook to help a family who has a smartphone and several students in our school. The smartphone allows them some access to the technology and teacher support. However, they are still at a huge disadvantage in resources and support opportunities. Other children and families can access the websites and programs the district has to offer to increase learning. The children with only a cell phone can not access these additional programs.
This is the best we can do, but it is NOT even close to the other resources and support that are available for students who can access a computer.
If I could get this family a laptop, I believe that would provide my student's family with access to all that Teams has available. As well as the access to the other online programs the district offers that cannot be accessed without a computer.
None of these things will ever replace the learning that occurs in a school or serve as viable substitutes for the overall educational experience. In the meantime though, we can help get some more families a little closer!
