I am the librarian/library teacher at PS 251 in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn. Our school is a Title 1 school with over 80% of the population receiving free lunch.
About two weeks ago, my principal asked me to open the library on my free periods to allow the upper grades to experience book circulation. It has been a great success so far -- the 4th and 5th grade teachers are thrilled and the kids are really benefiting from it. The principal is happy because now every child in the school has a book on a weekly basis.
Problem: My library is really outdated. I have tons of early childhood picture books and easy readers with many authors represented, but when it comes to the older grades, they're really looking for something different.
One of the 4th grade teachers found Zathura by Chris Van Allsburg on the shelf the other day and the kids went CRAZY. Alas, it was my only copy. PLUS, it was the only Van Allsburg book that I had besides Polar Express.
Please help me grow my collection of Chris Van Allsburg books and satisfy the literary appetites of our older children.
