I am a teacher amazing children in the Oakwood section of Staten Island, New York. I work in a lovely neighborhood school in a neighborhood that is rapidly changing. We are now housing many more immigrant families (Chinese, Russian, Polish, Arabic, among many others) along with our working class New York families that have lived there for years. Many of our students only speak their home language until they enter Kindergarten meaning that they may come to school with limited English speaking and comprehension abilities. These children sometimes find it difficult to interact with teachers as well as their peers.
