My students need to integrate arts, literacy and technology by writing and recording a song and video about a person of courage related to civil rights.
I challenge my students to think beyond the surface. How can the lessons they learn in music and history apply to the present? We can't change the future if we don't learn from the past. Music is the key. It is a universal language and connects people from different cultures and walks of life.
My students are very lucky to have many opportunities to use technology and other tools within the walls of our building.
They are creative problem-solvers who need to be challenged and want to expand upon their knowledge in an exciting way. Our school has many new initiatives such as the Middle Years Programmed, a pre-cursor to the International Baccalaureate, which encourages students to do interdisciplinary work they haven't yet had the opportunity to experience.
My Project
Chords of Courage celebrates the very best of the courageous among us through the use of song and video and is the first organized campaign to do so. It is a charitable 501(c)(3) media organization telling stories to transform the conversation of our country as well as the global conversation from the demoralizing and cynical to the hopeful and inspirational, one song at a time.
Chords of Courage will pilot a songwriting project with the 6th grade at our school. As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts, we will work with students to select a Chords of Courage qualified subject, conduct research about the person, and write an original song related to civil rights.
The project will enable students not only to learn about their person of courage and how to create a music video, but also will reveal and reinforce students’ own ability to impact the community in which they live and inform them of ways to do so.
In addition, students will benefit from a meaningful, one-of-a-kind experience that will positively influence their thinking and actions for years to come and contribute to their becoming concerned and engaged citizens.
