Help me give my students the learning environment they can thrive in. Flexible seating comes in many ways such as portable cushions, lap desks, or bouncy balls. Students can focus while getting their wiggles out!
The second grade students at this school are a curious and energetic group who love to play, read, and experiment with hands-on activities. These students come to school everyday to work through challenges, solve problems, and stretch their brains with a growth mindset.
Students practice being proactive and making a plan when it comes to their learning.
Being a Lighthouse school, all students learn how to incorporate the 8 habits of highly successful people into their academics. Students set goals, and work hard to achieve their personal and academic goals.
I plan on using flexible seating options to allow students to be in a safe and comfortable learning environment. I notice students constantly wiggling in their chairs, tipping in their chairs (which is not safe), or simply opting to not use a chair at all. In order to increase students' attention and motivation to learn, I plan on using several different seating options for students to choose from and use during the school day. Flexible seating movement has several physical, emotional, and academic benefits such as choice, movement, sensory input, and motivation.
Giving students flexible seating options teaches students to become proactive by being more aware of the choices they make that help them be successful learners.
If students feel they can concentrate better with a seat cushion to wiggle around on, they should have access to those necessary tools. If a student needs to move to a different spot in the classroom and not be distracted, s/he should not be confined by the mobility of a classroom desk. Students will benefit from having flexible seating options to help them be successful learners.
