My third grade students are a diverse group of learners full of curiosity! Each day they bring with them a variety of learning styles and academic needs. Many of my students experience many challenges outside of school. My school is a Title I school which means most of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch. My classroom needs to be a warm, welcoming environment so that my students can learn.
My students enjoy engaging, hands-on activities and projects that allow them to share their creativity, and they love being given choice in their learning.
One choice that I want to provide is alternate seating options to help create a positive learning community and foster their collaboration and creativity.
My Project
My students need to be able to choose the work environment that best suits their needs. Our classroom has tables in need of stools so that students can work together on projects and assignments. The stools will allow them to sit at different tables around the classroom. The foam floor mats will be used as a rug in the reading corner, and in addition, students can use them to find spots around the room for both independent and group work.
When students have choice in their learning environment, their engagement and focus increase.
Having the stools and floor mats will allow movement and an alternate seating option rather than sitting in desks all day.
