Do you remember Choose Your Own Adventure books? You know, the books where the reader gets to pick which way the story goes? Those books were the best! I adored these books as a kid and I was surprised that most of my students had never heard of them. I would like to have students create their own version of Choose Your Own Adventure books.
In my College and Career Readiness class, students work on a lot of social-emotional skills like conflict resolution, communication, organization, goal setting, and working as a team.
Students will need these skills regardless of the path they take post high school. Students also learn about future careers, college or training pathways, and budgeting for their futures.
One of the best skills we can teach students is how to anticipate potential outcomes. Writing their own Choose Your Own Adventure books will allow students to creatively think through what a characters future will be. Students will gain insight through research which will help make their stories realistic. Creating a character also allows students to explore potential paths in a non-committal, non-threatening way. Middle school students are often very self-conscious and making up a character will give students cover to truly explore what they want.
The requested book binding machine and book covers will give students a substantial way to complete their books. Our finished products will look professional and give the students pride in what they do.
