My students need wobble chairs, balance ball seats, floor seats and cushions for opportunities to be comfortable, and freedom to move in class by choosing a seat like a large pillow or a comfy floor seat rather than a chair that makes them stiff all day.
I have 18-20 students in my classroom that come to school everyday with smiles on their faces eager to see what is in store for them that day. I have a diverse population of students and I strive to meet the needs of each one.
My school is 100% free breakfast and lunch and my students come from a variety of backgrounds. My goal is to make each child's transition into school a positive experience so that they will love to learn and enjoy school.
Being kindergarteners, my students need to be engaged 100 % of the time and a lot of times the classroom is the only place they get the attention that they desire. I love my job for all the "ah ha!" moments I get to see each year and the love and hugs are a definite perk that I wouldn't trade for anything in the world!
Imagine being 5 years old and stuck in a plastic chair all day long...YUCK! My kindergarten students need an opportunity to get their wiggles out and be comfortable while they are learning what school is all about. What better way to do that than with flexible seating in our classroom. With cushions, pillows, wobble chairs, balance balls, and options for floor seats, the students will have a chance to choose how their learn best each day.
Flexible seating will help improve focus and engagement in our classroom to increase student achievement.
In the past, I noticed my students were getting antsy all the time and no matter how many brain breaks we included, they were still restless. I believe that giving the students a chance to choose their seats and how they would like to learn each day will help them to not only be attentive to lessons and do their best work, but also increase their social skills since they will be able to move around and sit with new friends each day. While I have begun the slow transition into flexible seating, I am hoping to give my students more opportunities and choices this year. I am excited to see how this years group of students likes to learn!
