Happy faces, warm greetings, contagious laughter, and sweet hugs are gifts that I receive when I open the door to start a new day. My bright-eyed third grade students are full of energy and eager to learn.
Although these students live in a high poverty community, they continue to work hard and strive to be their best.
My classroom is a mix of regular education students and Special Education students. At times there are struggles to keep these students engaged, especially because they are all learning at different speeds. Not only do they come with learning disabilities, but they also have real life struggles outside of school. Most of my students come from broken homes, or are living with a distant relative. A few do not have a house to live in, but live near by in a car or in a tent. Some of their parents are in jail or not present. With all the adversity they face, they still manage to come to school ready to learn. These students teach me everyday to appreciate life, and never give up. They are the true meaning of Aloha
My Project
Providing a flexible seating classroom for my students will allow them to choose how they want to learn. I believe that my students should have the choice to learn in a space that is comfortable for them. Multiple seating arrangements gives them the opportunity to decide what works for them. Students sit down for more than 5 hours in a day. I can't imagine sitting down for that long without standing up or walking around.
Giving my students the opportunity to choose their seating arrangement will allow their minds to stay engaged in the lesson.
Not only will my students feel a sense of empowerment, but flexible seating can improve their physical health. Flexible seating allows students to rock, wobble, and move with little to no classroom disruption. It also promotes collaboration with ease, as students are allowed to gather in groups. This also forms a sense of community.
