My students are in the 3rd grade at a Title 1 school in Central Oahu. Our school is ethnically diverse with majority of the students being Hawaiian (34.6%) and 10.8% Pacific Islanders. Our students live in a rural town where there is a strong sense of caring and pride for their school community. Major issues for our community include a lack of jobs, particularly jobs that require post-high school education, limited free preschool opportunities, and high poverty levels. My students struggle each and everyday to focus on educational issues, all while dealing with real life struggles at home. They are enthused to learn, and appreciate the simple things in life. My students view school as a safe and fun place to be. The staff here at our school provide quality education in a nurturing environment. The teachers here go above and beyond to make sure our students are receiving the best quality education with little to no
