Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"The whole world opened to me when I learned to read." - Mary Mcleod Bethune. Opening the doors through reading is my goal for my students.
Students at my school are so eager to learn and absorb knowledge on a daily basis.
My goal as a 4th grade teacher is to see plenty of growth in my students and teach them to love learning. My school is located in a small rural farming area where many of the parents of our students are in the fields picking food all day. We are also a Title I and Renaissance school, meaning over 90% of our children get free lunches. Most of them have so many needs, live in poverty, and come to school with very little. Many of my students lack English fluency and confidence in mastering the English language because they come from Spanish-speaking homes. The parents at this school have a difficult time affording many necessities, let alone books and reading resources. So many of the items that are in the classroom come from our own pockets. I would like to help my students learn and become a learner for life.
My Project
My students who come from mostly Spanish speaking backgrounds, need to build up their background and vocabulary. These books are fantastic in keeping their interest, as well as helping them to learn along the way. These books will capture the attention of any students, especially my ESE (special needs) and ELL (Spanish speaking) readers. The titles of books selected are ones that interest the students. They will have opportunities to read about different myths (helping to build up their fiction exposure) and other science/history related topics. However, these books, the students can answer questions and build their own adventure! Reading comprehension is one of the most important factors of academic success. Unfortunately, a majority of the students who come to 4th grade are below level.
A student's reading level can jump, by making reading a part of their daily routine.
Access to books to accommodate different reading levels and interests will help encourage reading growth this year for my students.
