This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
Thank you for considering funding my project. I am a 6th grade math teacher, working in a school district where almost all students are from low-income households.
I strongly believe that students can be motivated to show kindness, love and compassion toward each other.
I want to teach my students to be compassionate by giving them rewards for being kind toward their classmates. I want to set up a kindness board, where students write positive sticky notes about their peers when they see them doing an act of kindness. As a group we will discuss how this act of kindness affects our peers around us, and how giving others happiness makes our life better. Every Friday, I will offer students rewards/snacks from my prize box for being kind and compassionate. I will measure the success in my students understanding of compassion by looking at the increase in the kind stickies each week. I will also use my kindness classroom discussions to measure my students understanding about compassion.
I also requested some medals for my students, as awards instill a sense of pride, and show my students that their hard work and efforts are noticed.
