I teach math, science, and social studies to fourth-grade students in a rural, Title I school. I am excited about my new group of students, who are innovative thinkers.
I am passionate about preparing students to be successful in their journey to becoming the leaders and problem solvers of tomorrow.
We are a small, rural school, with less than 300 students in kindergarten through sixth grade. Our teachers work hard to use engaging teaching methods and materials, but the lack of available funding is an issue due to our size. Our goal is to add motivation and excitement to learning each and every day. Resources are not easy to come by but necessary to foster the creativity and problem-solving skills necessary for success.
My Project
During independent work times my students have the option of choosing a work space that meets their unique learning style.
Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them.
Students responsibly choose a workspace, which they defined as somewhere they will be engaged in their work and not easily distracted. Giving students a choice in their seating, and making sure they are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them. Many children also need the option of seating that allows them to wiggle without distracting others. My students want to keep the privilege of choosing their seat, therefore they are choosing wisely where to sit, are more engaged, and get more work completed than when they are just sitting at an assigned seat.
My students are noticeably more engaged in their work and less disruptive of their peers when they are given a choice of where to work. Currently students have the option of sitting on floor cushions at a lowered table, a few wobble stools (which are an overwhelming favorite), a dining table, scoop rockers, a "cozy" chair, or using clipboards on the floor. The students love the options we currently have, but we need to expand our seating choices. Due to the overwhelming popularity of our wobble stools, I am requesting 4 more.
I have seen how choice can positively affect my student's demeanor, learning, productivity, and build responsibility for learning. These additional seating options will help us grow as responsible, productive learners!
