My Students

I teach English I, typically 9th grade English, and a literacy intervention class. The students in these courses enter my classroom with a range of literacy abilities and interests. Some of them don't understand why they are still learning English when they are native speakers and "know" how to read and write. These are all opportunities to make literacy instruction that is geared towards making students embrace their own identities in books and writing.

My students are dreamers, doers, and change-makers; they deserve to have access to books and reading nooks that inspired them to challenge themselves.

My students are special because they dream of being mechanics, teachers, doctors, architects, stockbrokers. They love music, dirt bikes, and horses. They are finding themselves still and reading will help them to identify who they want to be and develop empathy for others. Reading texts with content that is geared towards their age group and interests will also allow them to reach their dreams because being literate opens doors and provides opportunities for them to be whoever and do whatever they want in the future.

My Project

The materials will provide reluctant readers with choice in their reading and space to engage in reading with. The book club texts will allow for students to read more recent and relevant texts while also finding joy in the reading.

My job as a literacy teacher is to bring the why and how to literacy; choice in books provides the map to both.
