Our middle school art students are hilarious, creative, and community-minded. I am in awe of how they care for their classmates and critically examine our world through art. The art room communes a socioeconomically diverse group of students. GMS proudly supports English language learners as the English language development middle school magnet, GMS also facilitates a center-based program for neurodiverse students, and GMS provides holistic and therapeutic social-emotional supports to students with profound emotional disabilities in our Apollo program. Students receiving services from all three of these programs are members of the GMS art community alongside their general education peers.
My delightfully diverse students are motivated to create great art and deserve materials to explore artistic mediums and materials that they find interesting and inspiring.
The sky's the limit for these creative GMS artists!
My Project
Teaching for Artistic Behavior (TAB) is a student-directed approach to teaching visual arts that meets the needs of all learners through choice, agency, flexibility, and emergent curriculum. TAB's three-sentence curriculum guides the art environment: The student is an artist. The classroom is the student's studio. What do artists do? Through centering these three sentences, studios take ownership of their art and build confidence as artists.
Funds generated through this campaign will be used to stock the studio spaces in the classroom with the necessary consumable supplies for drawing, painting, printmaking, and fiber arts.
As many of the resources in the art classroom are consumable, materials will need to be replaced as they are used. Students need ready access to materials for art-making in order to have agency over their art-making and see the classroom as their art studio and workshop.
