Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach preschool in a self-contained classroom on an elementary school site. My students are ages 3-5 years old with a wide range of special needs. I teach 2 sessions a day of up to a total of 24 students. My AM session is for my students with cognitive, speech, and mobility needs. The PM session is for my students with speech and language needs.

Early childhood education provides a foundation for students to grow and thrive to their full potential.

These students have so much potential and joy, and they are what brings me to work every day. Their enthusiasm for learning gives me the drive to provide them with the skills and tools they need.

They make progress every day they come to school. Even if it is not noticeable at the time, progress is being made. Their faces light up when they learn new skills or concepts, making the classroom an amazing place to be daily.

My Project

In our classroom, independence is our ultimate goal. We are always trying to find ways to get our students to be more independent. Snack time is the best time of the day for students to express this independence. They can do this by making choices on what to eat, making requests, opening their own packages, and feeding themselves.

Snack time not only develops independence but also works on so many other necessary skills for our students.

Making requests helps to develop communication skills, opening their own packages will develop fine motor skills, and feeding themselves is an essential adaptive daily living skill. During snack time, students are also working on their social-emotional skills by sitting and talking with their peers.
