My students need a variety of art supplies such as red and gold ribbons, red T-shirts, wooden sticks to make props for the dragon dance and the ribbon dance in our Chinese Cultural Festival.
Chinese is a less commonly taught, but strategically important language. Many students are scared away from learning Chinese because it is too foreign a language. It does not use the Roman alphabet and sounds totally different. I want to encourage their appreciation of the language and culture.
My students are a group of smart, creative, and enthusiastic young people who are open-minded and welcome challenges.
Many of them enjoy practicing their Chinese in many different ways such as doing skits and music videos. They enjoy having new opportunities to use the language they are proud of learning. My school has been very supportive of the Chinese program. It has granted permission for all of our field trips, which has allowed my students to have eye-opening and inspirational opportunities to experience the Chinese culture and language outside of the school.
My Project
My students will put together a Chinese Cultural Festival to showcase to our school, parents and our community how the Chinese language impacts their life, demonstrates that anyone can do it, and demonstrates how a language becomes their noticeable new talent. My students will use the materials to make props and costumes for performances in the festival. They have shown tremendous interests in learning Chinese language when combining with cultures and authentic tasks, especially when they are going to take the main roles in their own stage productions and shows.
As a teacher, I am so proud of these lovely brave souls and would really hope for our school and community get to know more about my students and how Chinese language has impacted their lives through this cultural festival.
The donations will provide my students with hands-on learning experiences through making props, costumes and other cultural decorations, in addition to practicing language-concentrated performances, which are critical elements to make the cultural festival happens.
