Help me give my students sensory items to help them avoid challenging behaviors sometimes associated with autism by providing items that can be used in an environment that offers an opportunity to control, manipulate, and self-regulate.
My students range in grades 4-6th. Their appreciation for the little things and the obstacles they have already overcome in life inspire me. I have built a positive relationship with my students and their families and I their lives have become part of mine. As a teacher, education is very important but sometimes in order to meet their educational needs other needs to met first. Sometimes my students just need that simple smile that helps them feel welcome and other days they need a sensory break. I definitely appreciate everyone of my students unique personalities and they inspire me to want to be more and do more. I had a student that was struggling to do his academic work and after problem solving, we found he needed to swing and listen to some calming music every morning.
My students work hard everyday to adapt to a world that isn't always setup for them and I would like to give them a small part where they don't have to adapt, but just be them.
Sensory breaks are beneficial for students
that benefit from additional movement or deep pressure input opportunities to help with focus, attention, and learning.
My Project
The impact and results of a fully equipped sensory items would help my students by reducing anxiety and self-calming in shorter periods of time, returning to the classroom more quickly, and missing less learning opportunities.
Students with autism can display unique responses to the school environment and the world around them.
Likewise, their preferences to work with a particular piece of sensory room equipment can be highly individualized and can vary. This project would give my students a variety of options to choose from and help them work on reducing and self-calming strategies.
