Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As my fourth graders walk into my classroom, their eyes light up and they ask about our beloved classroom pet, Smiley, a barred Texas salamander. They are eager to find out who will be the day's Zookeeper, tasked with taking care of Smiley and feeding the inhabitants of our two small tanks, which contain miniature shrimp, snails, Tetra fish, and a Betta Fish. The role of zookeeper helps students develop crucial life skills such as responsibility, patience, care, and empathy towards others.
Having pets in our classroom creates a peaceful environment that provides much-needed tranquility and comfort for some students who face challenging circumstances outside school.
Our classroom pets are more than just objects; they are living textbooks woven into various lessons and hold significant value for many of my students differently. Often, I observe them seated by the aquarium, mesmerized by the fish and shrimp, or Smiley in his tank at the back of the room. Whether they need a moment of calm or enjoy observing the diverse inhabitants, the pets are a source of fascination for them.
For the upcoming 2024-2025 school year, I'm creating a Chill Zone at the back of my classroom. The Chill Zone will serve as a cozy reading and hang-out spot and, if needed, a quiet area for any student needing to relax. In designing the layout, I've incorporated our existing classroom pets, along with the addition of a new bearded dragon habitat. The inclusion of a bearded dragon in our classroom will be highly beneficial, not only because it's a significantly different animal from our current pets but also because students will have the opportunity to hold and interact with it, which is something they are unable to do with Smiley due to its delicate skin.
