Children with Autism Hear, Smell, Taste, and Communicate!

My students need a tonal bell kit with song cards, scented markers, oils, and inhalers, flavored sprays, textured spoons, and ink for printing out visual aides to create multiple communication activities.

Let's give them something to talk about! I am a special education teacher for 9 amazing primary students with autism in a self-contained classroom in a high-need community. Although my students are mostly nonverbal, there is so much that they wish to express!

I have been working hard to help my students to communicate their needs and wants using picture symbols, and it's working! Currently, my students are able to use picture symbols to ask for a favorite toy or fun activity -- but I want them to expand their emerging vocabularies and be even better communicators! I would like my students to be able to make comments about their surroundings, such as "I smell _______" and "I taste_________!" Introducing fun activities involving musical bells, essential oils, and flavor sprays would be a great way to stimulate my students' senses and improve their communication skills! Unfortunately, there is an obstacle in the way -- our school's budget has been drastically slashed this year, and there is a severe lack of funds available to my classroom.

But this is where you come in! By donating funds to this proposal, you will make a huge impact on my students' communication skills. The flavor sprays taste like strawberry, lime, grape, and lemon, so my students can comment on if they smell sweet vs. sour or on specific flavors, the tonal bells have different colors and numbers, so my students can comment on those aspects as well, and the scented markers can also be requested by color -- the opportunities are endless, there are so many lessons that can stem from these materials! Using the ink cartridges, I can print out colorful picture symbol cards for each of my students to use in the activities.

Your help will provide my students with countless multi-sensory communication activities, ensuring that they will expand their budding vocabularies and continue to grow and learn in exciting new ways. Even though my students cannot yet hold conversations, this will bring them one step closer -- and a very big step at that. Make a difference today!
