Children Explore While Making Personal Books

My students need a digital camera and printer to create personal picture books about themselves, which will be a lifelong memory of their year in my class.

My Students

I teach using the Illinois Standards on a daily basis. To reach the goal of reading and understanding literature of various societies, eras, and ideas, I plan on having my students create personal picture books to share with their peers, and to keep at the end of the school year.

Many of the students in my public school classroom come from an impoverished environment.

They have never seen themselves in a book. By creating their own book they will be able to meet learning standards, including retelling information from a story, responding to simple questions about the reading material, and making real-life connections with the reading material. My students are funny and very inquisitive. They enjoy sharing books with one another, and exploring their world through print media.

My Project

By receiving these much desired materials, my students will see their creativity come to fruition. By making a personal picture book, students will see themselves, and their family members in an actual book. The many cultures in my class will have opportunity to see books with their culture represented, and can share their culture and ideas with their peers. The world is a melting pot of cultures - it is important to explore these cultures for better relations and understanding.

Lastly, thank you for making this dream come to a reality.

Young children notice differences, and yet, it doesn't really matter to them. I feel it is important to expose them to many different cultures and ideas relating to their community and their world. By doing so, it is my goal to help shape a better society promoting equality and understanding.
