My students come from an inner city. Most are low income families who have unique living situations. These students just want to feel loved, heard, and have a safe and dependable environment that they can come to to learn and grow emotionally. I love their passion for learning and their innocent and happy personalities that just crave good role models to help mold them into the best version of themselves.
My student LOVE to move!
They are most engaged in learning when an interactive and fun environment is offered to them! They are always willing to help clean, organize and make signs to support a healthy and happy learning atmosphere. Many of these children do not hear encouraging words or experience wholesome family environments on a daily basis. School is the only place they can express themselves and learn to be a responsible, loving, and kind human beings. When they witness these actions, you can see how happy it makes them. Most of my students create their own classroom rules because structure is something almost unknown to them outside of these walls. Giving them the classroom they deserve is the least I can do for them.
My Project
Currently, my students have limited ways they can sit to listen and learn. Chairs are wonderful but kids thrive on a variety of seating options that allow them to move, wiggle, and rotate which keeps them engaged, happy and even more focused!
When their bodies can expel energy in an acceptable way, they are less likely to become distracted or feel the need to act out inappropriately.
Our ball chairs would be situated around a table my students use during centers to play with manipulatives and the bar stools would be used around my guided reading table. These chairs also encourage students to use proper reading posture and not slouch while giving them the excitement of new ways to sit! My students would be thrilled and benefit greatly from the option of flexible seating!
