I love teaching in Ferndale! We are a district full of diversity in a connected community. My classroom is a Transitional Kindergarten known as First Fives. My students are blessed with the gift of time and have a bonus year to develop their social/emotional, fine-motor, gross-motor, and academic skills needed in Kindergarten. Students enter my classroom as four- and five-year-olds and leave as leaders who are ready to rock Kindergarten.
By creating a hands-on learning approach I am hopeful to inspire our young learners to continue on a path of their love for learning.
First Fives is a gift of time that will continue to give throughout their educational career.
My Project
In my classroom not only are students prepared for Kindergarten by knowing their letters and sounds, they also leave knowing how to write their letters! In order to achieve this students need to have a classroom full of hands-on experiences!
It is important that my First Five students have many opportunities to learn through play!
The Writing Bundle provides for just that! My students love building, and the 'Build the Letter' shows them how to create letters and to make sense of straight and curved lines. They are able to create letters which eventually helps them to visualize when it is time to write! Also, the Find the Letter center is exciting for students to use tongs and dig around until they find their letter!
Furthermore, in Transitional Kindergarten we do a lot of whole group learning. The double-sided whiteboards provide for letter practice to help them understand directionality and letter sizes! Overall, all of the materials requested are hands-on and reusable tools to learn letters. My students will enter Kindergarten as independent writers!
